The Big-12 conference is conducting preliminary talks with the University of Connecticut (UConn) about joining the conference in all sports, according The Athletic on Friday.
While still early in talks, UConn athletic director David Benedict and board chair Daniel Toscano met with Big 12 athletic directors in person in Dallas last week. A Big 12 board call is being planned for next week with the league's presidents, according to sources.
If such a Big12 expansion takes place, UConn would compete in football in 2031. Such a move would trigger speculation of other schools joining the conference to balance out the Big-12 geographic footprint and scheduling model.
Could this report be an early sign of the next wave of conference realignment in the future?
