The Canes travel across the country this week to play the University of California (3-1, 0-1 ACC) in the Bears’ first ACC home game in history.
Miami (5-0,1-0 ACC) enters the game undefeated after a thrilling and controversial victory over Virginia Tech last Friday night.
Let’s do a quick breakdown of the Golden Bears.
Coaching:
Cal head football coach is Justin Wilcox with 23 years of college coaching experience. He has coached at such schools as Boise State, Tennessee, Washington, USC, and Wisconsin. In his eighth year at Cal, coach Wilcox has a head coaching record of 37-43.
Offense:
The Golden Bears offensive coordinator is Mike Blotch. The Bears' offense ranks 99th in the country, averaging 23.0 points per game (#83 nationally), 1,496 total yards at 374.0 yard per game. Led by sophomore quarterback, Fernando Mendoza (Miami native) Cal has generated 913 passing yards with 5 touchdown so far in the 2024 season. On the ground, the Bears have ran for 583 yards and six touchdowns, led by junior Jaydn Ott with 267 yards (4.6 YPC). The Bears offensive line has given up 16 sacks to date in 2024
Defense:
Cal’s defensive coordinator is Peter Simon is a veteran defensive coach with 16 years of college coaching experience at such schools as Washington, USC and Louisville. He is in his seventh season at Cal. So far in 2024, Cal’s defense ranks 12th in the country, allowing 12.8 points per game and has given up an average of 287.5 yards per game (#23 overall nationally.) The Bears' defense has given up 182.25 yards passing and 105.3 yards rushing per game.
Special Teams:
Cal’s kicking game has made 5-11 field goal attempts and averages 40.65 yards per punt. The Bears’ kickoff return team averages 24.0 yards per return. The punt return team averages 4.7 yards per return.
The Miami-Cal game is set to kickoff at 10:30 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN. ESPN will also broadcast their College GameDay show from the Berkley campus starting at 9:00 a.m. ET.
