In epic fashion, the #8 Miami Hurricanes overcame all the doubters and physical obstacles to pull off a historic come back victory over the California Golden Bears (3-2, 0-2 ACC), 39-38, late Saturday night in Berkley, CALIFORNIA.
Despite the longest road trip in the country, despite a horribly late start, despite a national media calling for an upset all week, Miami (6-0, 2-0 ACC) showed the nation why they are a very talented and dangerous team.
All seemed lost when Cal went up 35-10 early in the third quarter. And then the national audience witnessed why Miami is a contender for not only the ACC Championship but also a national championship.
Up stepped Miami quarterback Cam Ward after a rough first half and put on a show national fans may not see again this season. Ward was the epitome of a field general. In the second half, he threw for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns and ran one in on the ground. With 26 seconds on the clock and down 38-32, Ward connected with TE Elijah Arroyo for game-winning touchdown.
For the game, Ward was completed 35 of 53 pass attempts (66%) for 437 yards and two touchdowns, while scoring on a 24-yard run. The Heisman race is on.
Senior wide receiver Xavier Restrepo lead all receivers with 7 receptions for 163 yards while sophomore running back Mark Fletcher led Miami’s ground attack with 11 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown.
Miami compiled 575 total yards on offense, with 437 yards coming in the air and 138 yards on the ground. Miami’s defense held Cal to a total of 297 yards. The Canes racked up 30 first downs to only 13 first downs by the Bears. Miami also won the possession battle 37:35 to 22:25.
The Canes still struggled with penalties, getting flagged nine times for 110 yards.
Miami heads into a BYE before traveling again to Louisville for another key conference match-up on October 19th.
Congratulations Canes!
GO CANES!
