Canes win thriller, 38- 34

Miami opened ACC conference play with a 38-34 thrilling victory over the Hokies of Virginia Tech (2-3, 0-1 ACC) on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

It came down to a last play decision by the officials on a “Hail Mary” end zone pass. Who caught the pass? The field officials said the Hokies caught it. The ACC review officials in Charlotte overruled that decision.

Miami wins!

Miami (5-0, 1-0 ACC) again rolled up yardage with 508 total yards vs 394 total yards for Tech. The Hokies rushing attack racked up 206 yards and kept the game close.

Miami quarterback Cam Ward didn’t have his best game but kept the team focused. Ward threw two interceptions and fumbled once. The Hokies took advantage and scored on two of Ward’s turnovers. In the end, Ward passed for 343 yards, with 4 touchdowns and rushed for another 57 yards. TE Elijah Arroyo led Miami receivers with 88 yards and a touchdown. WR Xavier Restrepo caught five passes for 60 yards and a spectacular catch on his back to keep a drive alive down the stretch.

Miami’s defense was tested by Tech’s running attack. VT running Bhayshul Tuten kept Miami’s defense on the field and off balance, running for 141 yards and a touchdown. QB Kyron Drones was elusive, totaling 43 yards on the ground.

BOTTOM LINE:

Miami won a tough and physical battle to win their first conference game of the season and stay undefeated.

Miami travels across the country next Saturday night to take on the California Golden Bears at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California.
