As we all come up for air after the miracle comeback victory over Cal in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday (no, Sunday morning), Miami head coach appeared The Joe Rose Show on 560 WQAM early on Monday morning.
Does this guy ever sleep?
Coach Cristobal shared his thoughts about the game and looked forward to Miami’s next challenge against Louisville as the Canes (6-0, 2-0 ACC) head into the bye week undefeated and #6 in the nation.
Miami started the game fast, scoring on the first drive for a 7-0 lead. Then the lights went out for remainder of the first half.
"It was obvious early that we were taking routine plays and screwing them up," said Cristobal. "We were just not executing to the standard and I'm talking about basic stuff—throwing, catching, blocking and tackling and when we started doing that and when we started tightening up and getting stops, there's the momentum that gradually grew and led to an unbelievable comeback.”
By halftime, Miami trailed 21-10. The Golden Bears extended their lead to 35-10 by midway in the third quarter. The Canes kept fighting and Cam Ward led an unforgettable rally to outscore Cal 21-3 in the fourth quarter for a thrilling come-from-behind 39-38 win.
Coach Cristobal knew his team wouldn’t quit.
"At the end of the day, let's go back to what football is, it's a four-quarter game," Cristobal said. "It's four quarters, 60 minutes plus overtime if necessary, and all I heard guys kept saying is that we're going to do this just one play at a time. Just keep fighting one play at a time and we worked our way back into it and gave ourselves a chance at the end and got it done.”
Miami has a bye this week. They then again hit the road on October 19 to take on the University of Louisville Cardinals.
GO CANES!
