“Coach L” resigns!

After more than 13 years as head coach, Jim Larrañaga is stepping down as Miami’s head basketball coach, effective immediately. Assistant coach Bill Courtney was named interim coach.

"After more than fifty years in college coaching, it is simply time," Larranaga said. "There is never a great moment to step away, but I owe it to our student-athletes, our staff and the University of Miami to make this move now when my heart is simply no longer in the game and I owe it to Liz, Jay, Jon, and my grandchildren to be a greater part of their lives. The University needs a new leader of the program, one who is both adept at and embracing of the new world of intercollegiate athletics. It has been the honor of a lifetime to be a part of the Hurricane Family and to represent this world-class institution. Most importantly, I have been so blessed to have coached the hundreds of young men who chose to wear the UM jersey and who have gone on to flourish in their respective journeys. I will always be a Cane."

“Coach L” leaves as Miami’s winningest coach in history with a record of 274-174 during his days in Coral Gables. In 40 years as a college head coach, Larrañaga has a 744–505 (.596).

“Coach L” led the Canes to their only Final Four appearance in 2023. He teams have won two ACC titles. In their run to the Final Four, Miami won their second conference title and posted a school record of 29-8. In his second season (2012-13) at Miami, Coach Larrañaga won an ACC regular-season and tournament title with a 29-7 record, earning the AP Coach of the Year.

In total, Coach L’s teams made six NCAA tournament appearances, advancing to the Sweet 16 four times. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year twice in 2013 and 2016.

“Coach L” was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.

Thank you coach for all you have done for “The U.” You are a living legend at the University of Miami.
