How the Playoffs work…
The first round of the playoffs with seeds 5-12 will be played on Dec. 20-21 and hosted by the higher-seed team.
The quarterfinals will be held on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 at either the Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl, Peach Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned based on consideration of the historic bowl relationship and seeding. If Miami is the ACC champion, the Peach Bowl would be the projected location.
The semifinals will be held on Jan. 9-10 at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl.
The national championship game is on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
The next college football playoff rankings will be released on Nov. 12.
