Is Rome Burning? NCAA on verge of collapse?

It appears there may be a palace revolt underway in the NCAA.

According to multiple sources from around the country, schools from three NCAA conferences are under discussion to vote to dissolve their conferences and form together under a new unnamed college athletic association.

Also, rumors of an unnamed media conglomerate willing to bankroll the new association for an exclusive 6-year media rights deal have NOT been confirmed.

This news is breaking less than a few hours after Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Jim Phillips blasted the NCAA about the conduct of the CFP selection process.

"I was stunned to see Miami, who went into the last weekend sixth in the country, go to a top 25 team at Syracuse and lose by four and fall six spots when an Alabama team played Auburn, a 2-6 team, and jumped up two spots," Phillips said on College GameDay earlier on Saturday.

"An eight-spot swing in one weekend I think was unbelievable to the ACC. Miami has two losses all year. A loss at Georgia Tech and to a 9-3 Syracuse team who's top 25 in the country. The committee has said multiple times we really are about watching winning teams, we value winning. That's what our teams have done. we've had a winning record against the Big Ten and the Big 12. We have fulfilled that.”

"For Miami to be leapfrogged in the last weekend when on the same weekend you had Michigan play Ohio State and Ohio State was a huge favorite, they lost and fell four spots. It doesn't make sense.”

For a Power Four Conference commissioner to publicly speak out against the NCAA, it was a clear precursor to the latest developments.

Earlier this year, media reports surfaced of a group of substantial power brokers planning such a breakaway from NCAA. Then, any mention of the group went dark. Could this be the same group?

If true, as many as 60-70 or more schools could vote to disband their conferences and leave the NCAA.

The CaneReports will monitor the situation and report any further developments.
