Miami is off to a blistering start this season. After dominating wins over Florida, Florida A&M and Ball State, the Canes are now ranked #8 in the nation. The competition won’t, however, get any easier as the non-conference slate winds down this weekend.
Miami (0-0, 3-0 ACC) will travel to South Florida on Saturday to take on the Bulls at Raymond James Stadium.
The South Florida Bulls (0-0, 2-1 AAC) are off to a solid start, easily defeating Bethune-Cookman and Southern Mississippi and taking Alabama 50 minutes into the fourth quarter before giving up four last quarter touchdowns to the Tide.
After reviewing film, we believe there are two KEYS to a Miami victory on Saturday.
Adjust to USF fast tempo of play…
South Florida runs an up-tempo offense. In their first three games, the Bulls averaged 78 offensive plays. They force the opposition to adjust quickly, thus causing defensive breakdowns. Look for Miami to minimize personnel rotations on defense.
Win the Battle of the Trenches…
South Florida is a very physical team. They want to wear you down. One of Mario Cristobal’s goals is to also be physical.
The Bulls’ secondary is their Achilles Heel. If Miami’s offensive line gives Ward time, the Canes should be able to capitalize. Miami’s defense must control Byron Brown’s running threat.
The team that wins in the trenches probably wins the day.
BOTTOM LINE:
Miami must control the game tempo and win in the trenches. Keep the Bulls’ offense under 65 plays from scrimmage and Miami should control the game’s outcome.
GO CANES!
