Keys to the Game: VT

Updated: Sep 27, 2024

Miami enters ACC play undefeated this week after dominating wins over four non-conference opponents. Miami (4-0, 0-0 ACC) will host to Virginia Tech on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Virginia Tech Hokies (2-2, 0-0 AAC) are coming off a tough loss to Rutgers last weekend to even their OOC record.

After reviewing film, we believe there are three KEYS to a Miami victory on Saturday.

Shut down the Hokies' ground game…

The Hokies are averaging 188.8 yards per game (4.7 YPC) on the ground. Miami’s talented and deep front seven on defense must shut down RB Bhayshul Tuten with 391 yards (5.8 yds per carry) and QB Kyron Drones with 209 rushing yards lead Tech’s solid rushing attack.

Win the Battle of the Trenches…

Virginia Tech is a very big and experienced on both sides of the line. Miami must match their play and control the trench and force the Hokies to throw the ball. Tech has a talented, but relatively inexperienced quarterback in Kyron Drones. His completion rate is below 60% and could suffer under Miami’s aggressive pass rush. Make Tech one dimensional on offense.

The team that wins in the trenches will win the day.

Pound the rock!

Virginia Tech is vulnerable to the run. With Miami's massive offensive line, the Canes should test the Hokies ability to stop Miami powerful running attack.

BOTTOM LINE:

Miami must establish a dominant running attack. Then control the Hokies ground attack and make Tech’s offense one-dimensional. Turn loose the Canes front seven on an young and inexperienced Kyron Drones.

GO CANES!
