February 1st... That date is the deadline for ESPN to notify the ACC if they will execute their media rights agreement option with the conference through 2036.
If ESPN executes their option, it means ACC schools will continue to fall further and further behind the SEC and B1G in revenue generation. The revenue gap will continue to widen, leaving the ACC and Big12 unable to financially compete. That would probably spell the death of the ACC.
However, a alternative solution may be in the works where ESPN agrees to change the terms of the current agreement by shortening the extension to run through 2030 and increasing the annual compensation to each school. The ACC, in turn, increases the marquee match ups for ESPN, including a three game conference playoff in leu of a single championship game at the conclusion of the regular season.
Such a solution can be a Win-Win for all parties.
Just a thought. But mark your calendar anyway.
