Mountain West expands…

The Mountain West Conference announced on Tuesday an expansion to include University of Texas - El Paso (UTEP). The Miners will begin competition for all conference sports in the 2026-27 academic year.

UTEP gives the Mountain West a highly sought addition in Texas. The expansion gives the league seven full-time members (UTEP, UNLV, San Jose State, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Air Force.) The conference must have eight member schools to satisfy the NCAA requirement for minimum conference number of schools. Hawaii is a a football-only member.

UTEP brings a strong football and basketball history and is located in the 25th most populated city in the United States, with a population of nearly 679,000.

It has been reported the Mountain West has verbally invited Texas State to join the conference. However, it’s also been reported the PAC-12 is also interested in Texas State.
