Portal Report… 1/6/25

To date, Miami has received eight commitments in the winter transfer window, including TE Alex Bauman, CB Ethan O’Connor, WR CJ Daniels, CB Emmanuel Karnley, OC James Brockermeyer, DT David Blay, CB Charles Brantley and S Zechariah Poyser.

More than two thousand players have entered the portal this winter including fifteen former Canes. Miami definitely has more roster needs to fill. Let’s take a look at the latest status of some Miami targets since our last report.

Landed:

TE Alex Bauman (Tulane)

Alex Bauman visited Miami this week. A proven red-zone threat, Bauman has 12 touchdowns over the past two seasons. He has committed to Miami.

CB Ethan O’Connor (Washington State)

A redshirt freshman in 2024, O’’Conner picked off four passes (one for a touchdown) while breaking up twelve more passes. He has committed to Miami.

OC James Brockermeyer (TCU)

James has committed to Miami and brings experience at offensive center, including starting all 12 games for the Horned Frogs and was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Misses:

LB Martavius French (UTSA => Colorado )

WR Zachariah Branch (USC => UGA)

S Zion Branch (USC => UGA)

Remaining Needs:

Miami still has roster needs at quarterback, safety, cornerback and wide receiver. Here are the available players Miami may have interest in.

WR Noah Thomas (Texas A&M)

At 6’6/200, Noah is a big wideout and potential WR1 for Miami. He is rated 92 and the #10 WR in the portal.

QB Carson Beck (Georgia)

There is some buzz here, but Beck may be heading to the NFL after some surgery. Probably a long shot here.

QB Jayden Mavaia (USC)

In recent days there has been real buzz about Mavaia hitting the transfer portal. If so, Miami would definitely be interested.

QB Mark Gronowski (South Dakota State)

A very productive three-year career at the G5 level. Could it translate to Power 4? Gronowski has thrown for 10,330 yards, 93 touchdowns, while completing 63.5 percent of his passes. Mobile adding1,767 yards and 37 touchdowns on the ground.

QB Quinn Ewers (Texas)

Another accomplished P4 QB. Like Beck, Ewers could be leaving for the NFL. However, many feel he needs to remain in college for one more year of development. Miami has a need and the proof of concept.

QB Jaden Rashada (Georgia)

Could Miami really entertain taking a second chance on Rashada? He’s burned a lot of bridges. Talented but a risky at this point.

CB Xavier Lucas (Wisconsin)

Much controversy surrounding this very talented cornerback. What’s the story behind Wisconsin’s delay of Lucas’ paperwork? If he enters the portal, Miami would definitely be interested in bringing Lucas home to south Florida. We should know more this week.

BOTTOM LINE:

Miami isn’t done in the winter portal. The Canes have positioned themselves well for as many as 1-2 additional key transfers going into spring practice.

GO CANES!
