SEC & BIG10 to meet

The SEC and Big10 conferences formed a joint advisory group in February. This group includes the leagues' university presidents, chancellors and athletic directors. ESPN reported on Monday the advisory group will meet next week in Nashville.

On the agenda are the conferences’ desire for automatic bids for next contract for the College Football Playoff and a possible partnership in football scheduling. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti are scheduled to attend this joint advisory meeting.

Football Scheduling Partnership:

Both the SEC and Big10 leadership are said to have an interest in a scheduling partnership. However, the hang up appears to be a common number of conference games. Currently, the Big10 plays a nine-game schedule, with the SEC playing an eight-game conference schedule. The conferences will need to agree to play the same number of conference games each season.

College Football playoffs:

Both the Big10 and SEC want four automatic bids in the next College Football Playoff contract. From all reports, there will be substantial resistance to such an accommodation. Some reports suggest the rest of college football would consider splitting off from the NCAA and forming a new association with national championship tournaments in all sports.

This joint advisory meeting could be pivotal to the future of college football and the NCAA.
