SNEAK Peak: Virginia Tech

Updated: Sep 26, 2024

Miami enters Week 5 undefeated after the non-conference schedule. The Canes open conference play at home against long-time conference rival Virginia Tech (0-0, 2-2 ACC) at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday night.

Miami (4-0, 0-0 ACC) goes into this game a 19.0 point favorite as of Tuesday. The Hokies (2-2, 0-0 ACC) are a talented and well coached team.

On offense, the Hokies have averaged 29.5 points per game. They run a balanced attack with 765 passing yards and 755 rushing yards. VT averages 69.25 plays per game. The Hokies are averaging 191.3 yards passing (7.1 (YPA) and 188.8 yards (4.7 YPC) on the ground per game.

Virginia Tech is led by QB Kyron Drones with 765 yards passing (59.8%), four touchdowns and three interceptions. Jaylin Lane is the Hokies top receiver with 247 yards on 17 receptions (14.5 YPC) and one touchdown.

With that said, let’s take a sneak peak at the Hokies.

STRENGTH: Veteran & experienced defense

Virginia Tech returns 20 starters overall with tons of game experience.

The Hokies are very big, powerful, athletic and deep on defense. They run a high pressure defense with really good tacklers. They are in the top ten in sacks in the country. Tech has allowed 22.75 points per game. Safety Mose Phillips leads the team with 29 tackles (12 solo) and 1 sack.

WEAKNESS: Talented but young QB

Kyron Drones is a true dual-threat quarterback. He’s a very good athlete, but lacks game experience. His completion percentage is below 60% and hasn’t scared defenses vertically. Drones has passed for 765 yards passing (59.8%), four touchdowns and three interceptions. Against a talented Miami defensive line, that could spell trouble for the Hokies.

BOTTOM LINE:

Virginia Tech is experienced and well-coached but inexperienced at the most important position, quarterback. As a result, the Hokies can be a very dangerous team or an easy mark.
