College football is in trouble.
Fans, schools are frustrated. More and more fans and alumni high rollers are using their feet, leaving the hallowed halls of college football.
Something bold and creative needs to be done. Is there a solution to save the game? Probably not one solution. It will take multiple solutions to get the game back on track.
This series will present creative, bold, but logical solutions for discussion. We’re going to throw some spaghetti on the wall in hopes of stirring some serious discussion.
In part four, we break down our third solution, the “Geographic Alignment.”
Current:
The NCAA Division I currently consists of ten (10) independent conferences and a group of independents (133 schools). In part three, we reduced the number of conferences to eight. That was a very strategic move.
More on that later.
Propose Solution:
Each new conference would have 10 schools. This number could be eleven (11), but for discussion purposes we will use ten schools. That’s a total of 80 (or 88) schools.
We propose aligning the eight new conferences geographically.
Each conference would have 10 teams, playing a 12-game schedule that includes nine conference games plus three cross-conference games. No more “cupcake games” on the schedule.
So, who goes where? Drum roll, please!

BOTTOM LINE:
Geographic alignment of the conferences brings back sanity to college athletics. No more ridiculous travel requirements for coaches, players AND fans. It also breaks up the “good ole boys” and the infighting that comes with it. It could also balance the field.
In part five of our series, we will breakdown the final structure of the college playoffs.
GO CANES!
