College football is in trouble. Fans and schools are frustrated. More fans and alumni high rollers are using their feet, leaving the hallowed halls of college football.
Something bold and creative needs to be done. Is there a solution to save the game? Probably not one solution. It will take multiple (5) solutions to get the game back on track.
This series will present creative, bold, but logical solutions for discussion. We’re going to throw some spaghetti on the wall in hopes of stirring some serious discussion.
In part three, we break down our second solution, the reduction of Division I.
Current:
The NCAA Division I consists of ten (10) independent conferences and a group of independents (133 schools).
Propose Solution:
We propose reducing to eight conferences, all reporting to the EVP Operation (see Restructure Management).
Each new conference would have 10 schools. This number could be eleven (11), but for discussion purposes we will use ten schools. That’s a total of 80 (or 88) schools. The current schools in Division I that don’t make the cut will become the foundation for a new Division II.
The current Division I conferences (10) would be dissolved and be reformed into eight NEW conferences. There may be similarities, but only because of geography. More on that later.
In part four of our series, we will breakdown the final realignment of schools into geographic conferences. That should be interesting.
GO CANES!
