theSolution: Eliminate Human Element

College football is in trouble.

Fans and schools are frustrated. More and more fans and alumni high rollers are using their feet, leaving the hallowed halls of college football.

Something bold and creative needs to be done. Is there a solution to save the game? Probably not one solution. It will take multiple solutions to get the game back on track.

This series will present creative, bold, but logical solutions for discussion. We’re going to throw some spaghetti on the wall in hopes of stirring some serious discussion.

We finalize our series with our fifth solution, “Eliminate Human Element.”

CURRENT:

The NCAA and the college football playoff has instituted a 12-school playoff in 2024. They use the AP Poll rankings and a selection committee.

PROPOSED SOLUTION:

The NCAA has always said they value conference champions highly in any playoff. The reduction of Division I to eight geographic conferences allows for eight conference champions.

Eliminate the use of media biased polls and the selection committee. Instead, the eight conference champions would automatically make up the CFP field.

BOTTOM LINE:

That’s it! There are five strategic changes that could save college athletics.

Restructure Management:

Conferences all report directly to the NCAA under a new chief operating officer (“Czar”). This eliminates the damaging competition among NCAA’s leadership.

Reduce Division I:

Consolidate existing Division I conferences from 10 to 8. This means the number of schools would also be reduced from 133 to 80-88 schools. Each conference would consist of 10 or 11 schools.

Realign conferences geographically:

This would bring sanity back to scheduling and travel for both teams and fans.

Reduce the College Football Playoff:

Roll back the number of schools in the playoffs to eight, using the eight conference champions to make up the field.

Eliminate the human element:

Eliminate the media polls and the selection committee. This eliminates bias, inconsistency and controversy.

IMAGINE… A national champion decided solely on the field of competition.
